A Wonderful Indonesian Friendship

This year Dr. Arismawan was the Shansi fellow who came from Ache Indonesia and stayed at Oberlin for the spring semester. He was engaged with the friendship Circle early on, participated in many sessions with deep cultural contribution, performed at our annual Friendship Festival and represented the best part of Indonesian culture. Aris is a great cultural ambassador of his country Indonesia. We will miss him and hope to see him soon. Bellow, please find a copy of his farewell talk.

The Farewell Talk by Professor Arismawan

Hello everyone,

How are you this afternoon? I hope all of you are doing well today.

Thank you so much for the opportunity given to me to deliver a speech in this goodbye lunch. First of all, I would like to thanks the Oberlin Shansi Visiting Scholars program for invited me and Tina to come here in Oberlin. Because of this program, I have a precious moment to experience Oberlin in particular and the USA in general. I would like to thank everyone here who made my life in Oberlin so wonderful. I like this city and its people. This is a quiet place which is good for study so that student can focus only on learning. The people are so nice, full of hospitality and offer warm and meaningful friendship. I’ve learned so much during my stay here in Oberlin and in the USA. In Oberlin College, I’ve learned its supportive education system, the interaction between lecturer and students, both inside and outside classrooms, friendship circle, indoor and outdoor activities, exco, and so many other things that I could not mention one by one.

I will share all these precious experience and knowledge to my home institution, my community, and my students. I will encourage my students to continue their education in the USA. I believe they must be very excited to be here.

I think I am going to miss this city, I am going to miss all of you.

Oberlin is home, I feel belonged here. I will try to find my way back here someday in the future. May the partnership between Oberlin College and Syiah Kuala University keep going well in the upcoming years.

I am so sorry I could not say your names one by one, because the time is just not enough to explain the kindness of all of you. One thing for sure that all of you mean a lot to me.

Thank you.
